External USB Drive shows up as RAW in Vista

If you have an external or internal drive shows up in Disk Management as RAW and it's not accessible from My Computer while that drive was fine on another system.

This solution is for error message when you try to create a new profile in Outlook 2003:

There was an error locating one of the items needed to complete this operation. It might have been deleted.

This error encountered and can be reproduced with the following:

  • Downgrade Microsoft Office / Outlook 2007 to Office / Outlook 2003.
  • Connecting to exchange server.
  • Operating system: Windows XP Professional.

There was an error locating one of the items needed to complete this operation. It might have been deleted.

Figure 1. When creating a new profile, an error message pop up as soon as OK button is pressed.

Failed to connect to exchange

Figure 2. On fig.1 profile is created even with the error message, and when trying to add a new account for exchange the same error pops up.

Solution:

  1. Delete or rename file: Mapisvc.inf in \Windows\System32 folder
  2. Delete or rename file: Mapisvc.inf in \Program Files\Common Files\System\MSMAPI\1033 folder (Thanks to Raven Maddox for the correction from my earlier article of \Program Files\Common Files\MSMAPI\1033)
  3. Create a new profile again and setup will re-install that file. New profile can be created and Outlook can connect to exchange.

My problem is similar, only Outlook 2007 has dropped my profile and as I'm
trying to readd this profile, the 'old' settings are keeping me from being able
to make changes. The mapisvc.inf file is not found anywhere on my computer. Any
ideas on where Outlook 2007 keeps such settings? I'm assuming the mapisvc.inf
file is an Outlook 2003 file. Thanks

@Dan Farrer

Both Outlook 2003 and 2007 are using mapisvc.inf, only
different version.

Try use search to find the file on your system drive
(usually C

Second option is uninstall and reinstall Office/Outlook.

the other folder should be
\Program Files\Common
Files\system\MSMAPI\1033
hope this solves any confusion...

Hope this clears up any confusion...

The trick of deleting those files worked great for me.. I had installed office
2007 on this machine then "uninstalled" it and reinstalled 2003. I guess
some of the files were hosed as part of that process.
Thanks again

Thanks for the snapshots of the exact errors as I got the same exact errors when
downgrading a few clients to 2003 that originally had 2007. I couldn't get
exchange to read the profile which was baffling. Thanks for being precise in all
documentation
